Transportation Efficiency Explorer

Transportation is a major operating challenge for a geographically large school district. This explorer puts Forest Lake Area Schools' transportation scale, fleet, mileage, funding pressure, and state funding formula into context so residents can see why routing decisions can affect both family schedules and the classroom budget.

Important scope note: Minnesota Department of Education tracks district-level pupils transported, mileage, hours, routes, and transportation finances. The current public export for those measures is delivered through MDE's interactive reporting system and could not be reproduced reliably for every peer district in a static website dataset. This version therefore publishes only transportation measures that can be independently verified. It does not create a peer efficiency ranking from broader "pupil support" spending or other non-equivalent measures.

Methodology and sources

Current fleet, annual mileage, district area, employee count, bus opt-in practices, and the district's statement about its prior independent transportation-efficiency study come from Forest Lake Area Schools' Transportation Department and transportation FAQ pages.

The February 18, 2025 Minnesota House Session Daily report documents more than 5,500 bus miles on a school day, an approximately $500,000 annual General Fund transportation funding gap, eight routes reduced to offset costs, and some route times exceeding one hour. Minnesota Statutes section 126C.10, subdivision 18a, currently sets the pupil transportation adjustment at 35 percent of the qualifying funding gap defined in statute.

Recent audit management reports are used only to identify years in which auditors specifically cited transportation as a contributor to purchased-services or pupil-support cost pressure. They are not used to infer a transportation-only dollar amount where the audit does not separately report one.
